Lay it down, Stand it up. Which way do I put a wine in my cellar?
Table wines should be stored horizontally, so the cork remains wet during cellaring. If the cork dries out it will shrink and allow air get to your wine. Air is the greatest enemy to a good wine and can convert it to vinegar. Where possible, always store your wines in their original wooden cases or packaging, if you are cellaring your wines as investments you add value to you wines by maintaining their original packaging. Champagne and sparkling wine can be stored vertically. (in the short term) Carbon dioxide within the Champagne bottle is heavier than air and will sit on top of the wine, acting as a proactive buffer.
